Welcome to this year’s first quarterly issue of Intermap’s Elevation newsletter. Moving forward, Elevation will offer a broader range (both in terms of geography and applications) of concise and useful information designed to help making your day-to-day GIS / Geospatial business decisions a little bit easier – that is certainly our goal.

With that goal in mind, this issue offers up a case study about a civil engineering and land surveying firm headquartered in southern California. The firm has been supporting municipalities and governmental agencies, school districts and universities, water management agencies, commercial developers and architects, as well as select private land developers for more than 30 years. I found the study quite informative and hope you do, as well.

Now is the time to let us know what we need to do to make the newsletter even better. I’m offering the first 50 recipients who click on “Feedback Forum” and answer five brief questions a $20 / €20 American Express gift card. That’s $20 / €20 for less than two minutes of your time that; time spent helping us offer up the kind of content YOU want to receive. If you prefer, we will donate your $20 / €20 to the Worldwide Green Foundation on your behalf to support a foundation that works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior. More information can be found at: http://www.worldwidegreen.org

Sincerely,

Kevin Thomas

Vice President, Marketing

Customer Profile

Cornerstone Engineering, Inc., a civil engineering and land surveying firm, has designed, managed, and constructed infrastructure systems, including transportation, wastewater, and storm drain facilities, for nearly 30 years. Headquartered in Bakersfield, California, the company supports municipalities and governmental agencies, school districts and universities, water management agencies,
commercial developers, and architects, as well as select private land developers.

The Challenge
Cornerstone Engineering requires high-quality digital terrain model (DTM) datasets to map alluvial fan floodplain areas that can impact multi-million dollar land development projects. In order to conduct vital floodplain studies, the firm's engineers needed large topographical datasets that detail expansive areas across California's complex and varied terrain - from rugged mountain ranges and farm-rich valleys to arid deserts and coastal plains.

Customer Profile
Located in Wales, the Radnorshire Museum, part of Powys County Council Museum Service, can be found in the center of Llandrindod Wells and holds numerous artifacts relating to the former county of Radnorshire. Llandrindod Wells, one of the most popular Spa towns in Wales, has been visited by people wishing to take the waters for medical problems since 1756. The museum tells the history of this development,
which peaked in late Victorian times and boasts several archaeological and paleontological exhibits.

The Challenge
In 2005, the museum won a Heritage Lottery Fund bid to build a multimedia presentation of a 20 km square of the English/Welsh border. This area is sometimes referred to as the Walton Basin, a former glacial lake. The idea behind the project was to present the same area over six historical epochs; starting with the post-glacial period through the Neolithic era, continuing through the Iron Age, Roman and Medieval times, and finishing with the modern era.
