Elevation Data & Imagery

"We only had the older and less-detailed U.S. Geological Survey 30-meter digital elevation model (DEM) data files and we really needed more accurate, highly detailed datasets, not 30-to-50-year-old DEMs."

     - Greg Gatkza, Deputy Planning Director, Kings County, CA, USA, June 2007

Height Matters

GIS and geospatial professionals working for government agencies and commercial enterprises throughout the world realize the importance of an accurate basemap. The basemap is literally the foundation upon which the success and failure of any geospatial project ultimately rests.

From transportation corridors and water supply systems to land-use management and structural engineering, an accurate foundation layer comprised of the most reliable height information available can literally mean the difference between life and death.

Our precision 3D elevation datasets and geometric images can provide a foundation layer of unrivaled accuracy for any geospatial project imaginable, including but not limited to:

  • planning for highway improvements and construction
  • providing reliable site-location information for a proposed grade school
  • assessing the potential risk of environmental hazards such as earthquakes, flooding, mudslides, and wildfires
  •
  • determining the safest route for a municipal water supply or treatment system

We offer four different geospatial datasets: orthorectified radar imagery, color orthorectified radar imagery, digital surface models, and digital terrain models.

An orthorectified radar image (ORI) is a grayscale image of the earth's surface that looks very similar to a monochromatic aerial photograph. However, ORIs are able to accentuate features far more than is possible with traditional aerial photography.
A color orthorectified radar image (CORI) is an image of the earth's surface with geometrical distortions removed. We create our color imagery by fusing multi-spectral imagery with our orthorectified radar imagery.
A Digital Surface Model (DSM) is a first surface view of the earth containing both location and elevation information.
A Digital Terrain Model (DTM), or "bald earth" as it is often referred, is created by digitally removing all of the cultural features inherent to a DSM — exposing the underlying terrain.

The abovementioned core products are available for purchase through the Intermap Data Store, directly through an Intermap sales rep, or through an Intermap partner. The types and specifications of these products depend on how and when the data was collected:

  1. As part of a custom mapping project, or
  2. As part of our NEXTMap® countrywide mapping program

In addition to the core products, we also offer a host of product and services derived from our comprehensive collection of geospatial data around the world, such as:
